Watching CNN last night, supporters of foreign outsourcing claimed that the tide could be stemmed by more science education in schools. I’m mystified by how that would help, as I watch so many qualified and highly-skilled IT professionals lose their jobs, even here in Seattle, strictly because labor from India is cheaper. The implication is that the US workforce is less skilled, but anyone from the animation industry knows that skill is not what’s in shortage here, nor does lack of skill stop CEOs from looking elsewhere. But just take a look at this Business Week article to see how many people lean to that viewpoint. John Edwards is the only candidate hot on the issue, and after the Bush administration came out with this economic report supporting “labor trading,” the Republican party has never seemed so out of touch or so close to losing my vote.
